singing for dancing, dancing for singing

Dominic Kelly
Dominic performs in schools, museums, libraries, arts centres and conservation sites, and has performed at major festivals across the UK, including Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts, Lakeland Storytelling Festival, Larmer Tree Festival, Sidmouth Folk Week and Whitby Folk Week.

Dominic traces his passion for folk tales and legends back to the rugged beauty of the Cumbrian Mountains where he grew up. The combination of wild uplands and old legends gave him a powerful sense of the relationship between land, people, story and imagination that would once have defined how we saw the natural world, each other and ourselves.

Dominic grew up in Cumbria, and north Lancashire, where he now lives. He has gained national recognition recently as one of the most prominent new voices in British storytelling. In 2009 he was awarded the New Directions commission by Cambridge Storytelling Festival to create an innovative performance based on traditional tales. Crow is the result.

Maz O'Connor & Matthew Jones
Maz - one of our local "stars" is not only a very fine singer of traditional song but an exceptionally good fiddle player and clog dancer. Maz has won the Traditional song competition at Fylde Festival and was a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Musician competition. Maz is joined by Matthew Jones - guitarist with Last Orders the band which won the BBC award a year earlier (and were star performers at Furness Tradition)

Larry Hanks

We are lucky to have caught a chance to hear American singer Larry Hanks on a short UK tour. Influenced by the music of Sam Hinton, Leadbelly, and Woody Guthrie, Larry is also known for his many old songs of the American West-- both sad and rollicking cowboy and work songs, topical and political songs, and Traditional American ballads. He is widely beloved as a live performer known for his deep, resonant bass voice, sparse and tasteful guitar playing, accomplished Jew’s Harpery.

Piper's Wyrd

Three fine musicians and performers from the North East of England. Chris Metherall, Hazel Hall and Ednie Wilson (The Mayor of Gateshead's Piper) specialise in playing northumbrian pipes in tight harmony - they are also not unlikely to sing and stepdance with equal brilliance. All in all great exponents of music and tradition from their region.

Striding Edge

Striding Edge are our dance band and hosts for Friday evenings opening ceilidh:

Prominent in the revival of traditional Cumbrian music happening over the last decade, Striding Edge deliver a feast of roots music sourced from the wild Eastern moors and mountainous central valleys of Lakeland

Unearthing dance tunes from the Cumbrian archives and delivering these with insight, attitude and energy, has always been at the heart of Striding Edge's unique approach.
