Education
We
feel that education and community work is vital for developing interest
and continuation of involvement in folk music, song, dance and storytelling.
In addition it is keeping alive the knowledge practice and research of specific
local traditions, music, songs, dance and tales in Furness
Activities to Date:
We
have worked with various schools in Furness organising music, dance, story
telling and performance workshops.. Dance and music workshops and
performances in community venues in Furness. We liaise with other local
and regional folk music, dance and storytelling providers of performances
and workshops in Furness. The aim has always been to encourage and promote
creative activity in the folk-arts of the area. This has been done by teaching
skills, dissemination of traditional arts material which would be otherwise
hard to access, and enabling students to use the material and take part
in a living culture.
Out
of School (Study Support) Activity:
As musicians have developed within the Schools
workshops we have been able to offer an out of school club. This group meets
regularly -
currently fortnightly - choice of activities is driven by the members. There
are usually practioners available to work with a range of instruments and
musical styles attending. More information here
Building for the future: long term aims
We
envisage extending this work into a long-term scheme involving more groups
and a wider area of Furness. We aim to promote not just creative participation,
but also inter-schools and inter-group contact, performance opportunities,
recording and archiving possibilities. There will also be scope for working
with people with disabilities.
