Pete
Morton -“a compelling singer, a master of pithy lyrics…one
of the most convincing singer songwriters on either side of the Atlantic”
(Dirty Linen). Add to this his powerful performance and an ability to interpret
traditional song with great feeling and relevance.
Roger Wilson is a master guitarist, fiddle player and singer
– interpreter of traditional and contemporary material and a songwriter
– in short – brilliant!
Roger and Pete are old pals – they both hail from Leicester and played
and toured together in “Urban Folk”
Martin Carthy http://www.watersoncarthy.com/
Tuesday
8th February 7.30pm Tickets £6.00
Martin
is universally regarded as one of the finest singers and interpreters of the
traditional music of the British Isles as well as a highly influential, innovative
and much imitated guitar player. In his forty years of performing and refining
this music Martin has been part of Steeleye Span, The Albion Country Band,
Brass Monkey and The Watersons. He was awarded an MBE for his services to
English traditional music.
Fairport Convention
Tuesday
8th March (Main Auditorium)
The
longest running and most well-known British folk rock band. They invented
it – it’s no surprise that they are the best!
Chris
Newman and Máire Ní Chathasaigh http://www.irishharper.com/
Tuesday
22nd March 7.30pm, Grasmere Room, Tickets
£6.00
Described
as the most influential Irish harper today, Máire Ní Chathasaigh,
was named Traditional Musician of the Year 2001. In partnership with English
guitar wizard Chris Newman, her ‘warm and expressive voice’ is
complemented by his ‘subversively witty introductions’. Their
breathtaking musicianship tests the limits of Irish and Scots music with touches
of calypso, bluegrass and 40s-style swing. Here’s a great quote - “This
harp player has reinvented the traditional harp. She and Chris Newman, are
indescribable, as his guitar virtuousity joins her musical genius.”
Jeff Davis
Tuesday
5th April 7.30pm , Grasmere Room, Tickets
£6.00
Fiddle,
banjo, guitar, mandolin (for starters!). Jeff Davis plays more instruments
than he can carry and carries more than he has time to play! He sings and
plays traditional songs and tunes from Southern Appalachia, New England, etc.,
often in the style of the musicians from whom folklorists collected the material.
One of the world's greatest performing experts on North American traditional
folk music. Brian Peters will be accompanying Jeff at this
concert.
